Top 5 Events To Attend In Goderich (Summer 2019)

Billed as the prettiest town in Canada by Queen Elizabeth II, Goderich boasts several aesthetic pleasures for the local people and visitors to enjoy, from parks to award-winning gardens. If you’re considering a road trip this summer, driving to Goderich is worth the time. Sitting on the edge of Lake Huron, Goderich blends rural and urban elements, possessing historic character and evergreen surroundings. Goderich Honda recommends these five events that are worth attending this summer in Goderich.

1. Goderich Farmers’ Market
Every Saturday, you can check out the self-professed ‘Granddaddy’ of farmers’ markets in Ontario, starting right after Victoria Day. It’s running from May 21 until October 8 in the downtown core, so come out to see Goderich's homegrown foods and get a taste of local culture. You will find homemade baked goods, eggs, honey, maple syrup, fresh meat, poultry, fish, Ontario-made fruits and vegetables, plus much more to activate your taste buds. And if you're someone who appreciates art, feast your eyes on local arts and crafts in the Makers' Market Area. Make sure to get out early for this annual event, which takes place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Saturday. Driving to Goderich for this event will be worth your while, and you can take some souvenirs home for you and your family.

2. Huron Multicultural Festival
If you have heritage outside of Canada and want to reconnect with it or just appreciate being around various cultures, this is the event to be at. Kicking off each summer in Goderich in a colourful manner, the Huron Multicultural Festival is a free event held at the Courthouse Square Park in the heart of downtown. It is a wide-ranging celebration with international food, music, and dance to partake in. If you bring your children, there are many activities for them to get involved in. There’s also a beer garden where you can have a few drinks to cool yourself down from all the moving and shaking in the summer heat.

From Scottish country dancing to Kung-Fu academies and musical selections from all over the world, you’re guaranteed to learn something new while attending this festival.

3. Concerts Galore for You and Your Loved Ones
Also, at the Courthouse Square, you can enjoy the free-of-charge Summer Evening Concert Series, one of the main closing Goderich spring events before moving into the summer. From June 6 until September 5, you can spend your Thursday nights dancing to a selection spanning multiple genres. Enjoy local bands, orchestras and jazz, as well as special appearances from established and emerging Canadian musicians. Take in soothing sounds or dance the evening away backed by the beautiful scenery downtown Goderich has to offer. You can also join the Celtic Blue Highlanders Pipe Band as they Pipe Down the Sun every Friday evening throughout the summer in Goderich. Pipe Down the Sun commences at the start of July and until the end of August at Rotary Cove by The Wheelhouse, with shows starting an hour before sunset. Feel just like you’re in the middle of Glasgow with bagpipes belting out traditional Celtic sounds spanning generations. Hundreds of people bring their lawn chairs and blankets each year for this event, with the music playing as the sun sets, relaxing amidst the sights and sounds. Other festivals to mark on your calendar if you’re driving to Goderich this summer include the Blyth Festival, a community-based professional theatre producing and developing plays that capture local and national culture. Alternatively, there’s the Celtic Roots Festival and Celtic College, presenting Celtic musical numbers, crafts and more, encouraging diversity and uniqueness. While taking your Sunday stroll with your family or significant other, head out to Lions Harbour Park for a rousing end to your weekend. Throughout the summer in Goderich, there are Sunday evening concerts sponsored by the Goderich Laketown Band, performing jazz and rock music throughout.

4. Goderich Triathlon
The summertime is an excellent time to use the outdoors to your advantage if you're trying to get fit and in your best shape. Put your fitness to the test at the Goderich Triathlon, set for August 18, where you can swim, bike, and run with a bit of a competitive edge. This multi-sport event consists of an Olympic triathlon, which includes a 1,000 m open water swim, a 42.5 km bike ride, and a 10 km race sure to get your heart racing. There is also a sprint triathlon consisting of a 500 m swim, a 28 km bike ride, and finishing with a 5 km run. And, for those of you who can’t swim (or just can’t be bothered to), there is the sprint duathlon. The duathlon includes a 5 km run, a 28 km bike ride, as well as a 2.5 km run. All race events start at the Goderich Main Beach area. You will need your strongest wetsuits as Lake Huron water can get pretty cold, even with the summer sun beaming down. The bike ride starts with a challenging climb up Harbour Street, with looping tracks to follow. The run portions also take you by Harbour Street, connecting to a double-wide path that leads to the Auburn Rail Trail, which is a hard-packed gravel track. It’s a true test of wills, but nonetheless, a fun one!

5. Circle City Cruize Nights
It would only be fitting that while driving to Goderich, especially if you’re a car enthusiast, you’d want to see what vehicles this lovely town has to offer. Starting on May 18, you can check out new and vintage vehicles when the Circle City Cruizers Car Club has their summer-long car show and cruize nights. There are 10 cruize nights throughout the summer, spanning Lions Harbour Park and Main Beach along West St. With each car show, you can see cars Show & Shine or catch up on Memories Then & Now. This is a series that will get you out of first gear with each edition. If you want to get around Goderich this summer and need a ride, Goderich Honda can help you make the right selection.
